Colonel (US Air Force retired) Carl Martin Hatlelid, born 13 September 1943 in St. Louis, MO, passed away 27 January 2010. Carl left us in the same way he lived his life. He slipped quietly away, in his typical calm, peaceful and unassuming fashion. He loved nature, a good book and most of all a challenge. Mediocrity was something Carl never knew, and that was obvious to all who knew him by his many achievements and the high goals and standards that he set. Carl was a compassionate and supportive person, who throughout his life contributed to many causes and individuals. He is survived by his best friend and loving wife, Kathie; his mother, Agnes Hatlelid (Ponca City, OK); brothers, John (Carol) Phoenix, AZ; Joseph (Karen) O'Fallon, IL; sisters: Anna Marie Haydock (Frank) Houston, TX; Helen Hester (David) Bartlesville, OK; sister-in-law, Patty Flory (Randy) Roanoke, VA; numerous nieces and nephews; and his loyal friend and running companion, Kirby. He was preceded in death by his father, Dr. Elbert Lewis Hatlelid. Carl graduated from Ponca City High School in Oklahoma and attended and graduated with a commission from the US Air Force Academy, continuing on with a master's degree in Space Physics from the US Air Force Institute of Technology. Throughout his 30-year career, Carl distinguished himself, not only as a person recognized for his technical talents, knowledge and leadership ability, but above all as one of those rare individuals who was respected and loved by all who knew him. After his Air Force retirement, he was employed by Oklahoma University as a Program Manager in the Center for Aviation and Systems Support. We have lost not only a gentle and kind man that we loved and admired, but also a scholar and true patriot. A memorial service will be held the morning of February 15th at 10:00 in Ponca City, OK at the First Presbyterian Church. A military memorial service with honor guard will be conducted at the US Air Force Academy in late spring.

A Funeral service will be held on 22 April 2010 at 1300 hrs at the Memorial Pavilion at the USAFA Cemetery. Carl will be inurned in the Columbarium at the Memorial Pavilion.
